The Truth About Jennifer Lawrence And Bradley Cooper's Relationship (2024)

Sometimes co-stars just really have great chemistry. We don't always have to read between the lines and figure out why.

We learned this powerful lesson when four-time co-stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence fiercely denied they had any off-screen chemistry, i.e., romantic attraction toward one another. And boy did they deny, deny, deny, after being questioned a million times. How were we supposed to know? We see great chemistry on-screen and immediately jump to conclusions that there has to be something going on off-screen. They have to realize who they are, though.

Cooper has a long list of female co-stars that he's had great chemistry with.He had so much chemistry with Renée Zellweger that he actually did take it to the next level and dated her, and no one really knows for sure if he had something going on with Lady Gaga.

Meanwhile, Lawrence has had the same rapport with her male co-stars. She had great chemistry with her Hunger Games co-stars, Josh Hutchersonand Liam Hemsworth. But there were rumorsthat she and Hemsworth had their eyes on each other at one point. Lawrence also had great chemistry with her Passengers co-star Chris Pratt, and like Cooper and Zellweger, Lawrence did date her X-Men co-star Nicholas Hoult.

But as much as we want BradLaw to happen, they're just work spouses. Like Kate and Leo, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

TheyAre A Perfect Match...At Work

So far, BradLaw has appeared in four consecutive films together; Silver Linings Playbook (2012), American Hustle (2013), Serena (2014), and Joy (2015). Three out of the four earned Lawrence Oscar nominations, with her taking home one for Silver Linings Playbook.

The film also earned her a Critics Choice Award, but she couldn't have done it without Cooper. In her acceptance speech, she gushed about the first time she shared a scene with Cooper, saying, "Bradley, the first time we ever did a scene together, you took my breath away. And the first time that I saw the movie, you broke my heart and put it back together."

That first film together pushed them to the limit, and something happenedonset that madethem want to keep doing it. Maybe it had something to do with the vigorous training they had to do for the ballroom dancing scene.

Cooper will never forget that experience he had with Lawrence. "I wonder if these guys who do Dancing With the Stars, like, have a connection forever. I really do think that really provided the basis by which we can just work together. We don’t talk often, but when I showed up in Boston for Joy, then all of a sudden, it was like we never stopped. We just started where we left off, and that’s rare. It’s just easy to look at her and feel like I’m telling the truth."

Cooper says Lawrence is "the person you want on set with you at 4:00 in the morning when you're losing your mind." Clearly, Lawrence thought the same about him because as she read the script for Serena while having a great time working with Cooper on Silver Linings,she actually made him sign on to the film with her.

"I forced him to come onto the movie. I mean, any male role is going to make me think of Bradley because, in my opinion, he's the best, and I love working with him," she told Cinema Society.

The reason why he let her talk him into doing the film? "I feel very safe [with Lawrence]. I can turn my brain off as an actor," he told Nightline in 2015.

"I respect her so much as a professional, as an actor, and I think she's the best there is," Cooper told reporters during a screening for Serena. "And I just learn from her. You always want to work with people that are better than you."

They Don't Need To Being Having Sex To Have Great Chemistry

They must be getting sick of reporters repeatedly asking them if they're dating. But as Cooper said, they hardly see each other. They're only together when they want to work together, and it's simply platonic, end of story.

That didn't stop Howard Stern from asking Cooper, "When are you two gonna have sex? Everyone is waiting for that." Cooper replied, "Never."

Stern asked if their 15-year age gap had anything to do with it, as Cooper answered, "I could be her father. No, I'm kidding. But no, not even close," to Entertainment Tonight's similar question about him and Lawrence dating back at the 2013 Golden Globes.

"We've done two movies together," Cooper added at the time. "If it didn't happen by now, it's not going to happen," Lawrencesaid sheconcurred.

"I said that once on a red carpet just as a diffuse thing, and then it became a thing because the girl I was seeing (Suki Waterhouse) was as young as she was," he explained to Stern.

"It just didn’t happen," Cooper went on to explain his and Lawrence's off-screen chemistry. "It’s not the way we are together."

Lawrence has also reiterated nothing's happened betweenher and her work husband a million times. "We bicker all the time, and we don't have sex! If you do, like, enough movies with somebody, everybody's like, 'Oh, well, they're dating, obviously!'"

She continued to say they'll probably make more movies together, but that's not going to make them want to date either. They might bicker like a couple, but they do agree on one thing; food. They never disagree "about where to go to dinner; we're both two of the biggest eaters in Hollywood,"Lawrence said.

So is this evidence enough to stop petitioning for BradLaw? No, we're still always going to want it, but we understand we'll never get it. Some stars just connect; that doesn't mean they're getting some from each other offscreen. However, that does happen a lot. We should probably put BradLaw to rest.
