Utah, Sunday, December 16, 1973 Cougars Score Impressive Wrestling Win Over Rams throughout the second period Mondt, a backfield coach at Colorado before coming to New Mexico, was an offensive guard and linebacker at Colorado in the late 1350s. He played on the 1957 Colorado team that won the Orange Bowl. Before going to Colorado as a coach he had coached at Washington High in Kansas City, and at Academy High in Colorado Springs. As offensive co-ordinator under Feldman, Mont's teams were second in the nation in rushing in 1970 and second in rushing and total offense in 1971.

Mondt is a native of Kersey, Colo. Lavon McDonald said Mondt was hired on a $25,000 contract, which could be renewed on an annual basis after two years. Mondt said he would install a prose offense at Nes Mexico, throwing out the Wishbone-T that Feldman had used. He said Boyd Dowler, a former teammate at Colorado, and Cheyenne, native would come to New Mexico in the spring to help with the new offense. "We're going to establish a whole new image here' in our football program," McDonald said, adding he hoped the current stadium could be enlarged in the future.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UPI) Former chief assistant coach Bill Mondt, 37, Friday was named the new lead football coach at the University of Ntw Mexico. Mondt was named to succeed Rudy Feldman, who was fired this fall after a 4-7 season. Mondt had been Feldman's chief assistant for six years, coming to New Mexico with Feldman from the University of Colorado. "I know we have a lot of work to do, but I think we have some very good football players here and we will build on that," Mondt said.

The BYU wrestlers rode us all night and there's no excuse for that. I don't mind being outwrestled but I hate to be outfought and that's what happened to us." In analyzing the match, Coach Davis said his team is potentially better than ihe one which finished fourth in the nation last year. He also rated CSU as the second best team in the conference this year.

BYU and CSU split the first four matches but, as expected, the Cougars really dominated the heavier weights. The Cougars won five of the last six matches two by fails and one by a superior decision. Close Match Rick Dawson a junior college national champion last year, opened the match for CSU with a narrow 2-0 victory over sophom*ore Terry Ripplinger. BYU frosh Ed Maisey came back with a 6-3 win over-sophom*ore Bob Dieli to even the team score at 3-3. Junior Mark Sanderson of BYU followed with a superior 14-4 decision over soph Jeff Schoeneman to give BYU a 7-3 lead.

The match was evened at 7-7 in. the 142-pound match as Tim Williams, a fifth piece finisher at the NCAA meet, downed freshmen John Mecham of BYU, 14-2. Williams nearly had pins in the first and third periods but Mecham stayed in control ByMIKETWITTY Herald Sports Writer The expected challenge by Colorado State to BYU's conference wrestling supremacy never materialized Friday night at the Smith Fieldhouse as the Cougars overwhelmed ine Rams, 29-10. On paper both coaches figured the match to be close. BYU and CSU were first and third in the Western Athletic Conference last year.

The Cougars were 'iliing some holes and the Rams are improved over a year ago. Both teams have two returning WAC champions. Both teams have a wrestler who placed in the top five at the NCAA championships last year. Fred Davis of BYU is the NCAA Coach of the Year. Jirr Kinyon, a former teammate of Davis at Oklahoma State, is th2 NCAA Rookie Coach of the Year.

Any other similarities between the two teams were not apparent in Friday's dual match as the Cougars looked very impressive and the Rams could not get untracked. Coach Pleased "I'm very pleased with our showing," said Coach Davis, whose Cougars have won the WAC title seven of the last eight years. The BYU coach was especially pleased that two of his three starting freshmen came through with wins. "I'm very disappointed with the way we looked," said Coach Kinyon, who produced ths best season ever at CSU in his initial season last year. From that point on, the Cougars owned the match.

Whimpey Wins Junior Dennis Whimpey upset defending WAC champion, Gary Blosser, in a 6-2 decision. Defending WAC titlist Mark Hansen pinned freshmen Bobby Mitchell with two seconds left in the second period. Those two wins gave BYU a comfortable 16-7 lead going into the 167-pound match. CSU switched junior Steve Jentzen with freshmen Lonnie Serfer to po against senior Craig Kjar and Jentzen came away with an 8-2 decision. But those were the final team pints for the Rams.

At 177, Mike Hansen pinned Seuffer early in the third period. At 190, Ben Ohai, third us the NCAA last year, toyed with junior Ted Kendricks in a 23-3 superior decision. A big upset came in the heavyweight match when freshmen Gary Peterson earned a 9-1 decision over senior Pete dark. Boise State Defeats Utah SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -Boise State's wrestling team, led by 430-pound heavyweight Mark Bittick, defeated Utah 29-5 Friday in a dual meet. Bittick took down 230 pound Utah heavyweight Joel Savage in for the only pin in ihe match. Ken Pence decisioned Dave Commesser 6-1 for Utah's only win. Jody Smith of Utah and Greg Leonard of Boise State battled to a 2-2 draw in the 167 pound match. Rupp Recovers ORLANDO, Fla.

(UPI) -Former University of Kentucky basketball Coach Adolph Rupp was reported in satisfactory condition today after undergoing surgery Friday night for a perforated ulcer. Rupp was hospitalized suddenly Friday night for severe stomach pains. The veteran coach was at Walt Disney World and was scheduled to appear in a Junior Pro basketball clinic in Orlando today. Rupp, 72, was reported in satisfactory condition after one-hour surgery at Orange Memorial Hospital. Carlson, UW President, said.

The vote on the drive was unanimous. The board voted against asking the legislature for approval of the drive and the expenditure.
